Mauricio Puente

Biography

Mauricio Puente was born in El Salvador in 1918 and painted there for most of his life. He is self taught and started when his was 8 years old. Ten years ago he moved to Pepperell, MA, to be closer to his family, where he continues to paint and teach locally. His work has hung in over 50 exhibitions, private collections and galleries across the United States, as well as Latin America, Brazil, and Belgium. His art has graced the walls of the King of Spain * and the American consulate in Spain. Mauricio’s work is in a Permanent Exhibition in the Madat Gallery in Belgium. He also is in a Permanent Exhibition with Marcio Rodriguez in Brasil.

Puente’s oil paintings capture the essense of his Salvadorian background with his most daring use of color and the influence of the imaginary. Memories of El Salvador and the silhouettes of New England combine in Puente’s work, creating imaginary landscapes of villages, city squares, and quiet mountainsides. Using only a palette knife, the combination of texture and color in his work mimics the vibrancy and energy of the subject matter whether it depicts a bustling street corner or a peaceful view. Maria Blanco, Art Historian and in charge of the International Committee of Spain says, “Puente’s paintings show the emotions of the moment without paying too much attention to the form.” His ability to draw and use the palette knife is of extreme quality.

Most recently in 2007, Mauricio participated in the 375th Anniversary of Boston Art Exhibit in Boston City Hall, sponsored by the Boston Cultural Affairs Office. His large oil of Downtown Crossing was voted 1st place in the oil class and is now hanging in the International Terminal of Logan Airport in Boston. Several local non-profit groups have benefited from Mauricio’s work. The Nashua River Watershed Association silent/live auction recieved the highest bid winner for one of Puente’s paintings. Also, the PACH Outreach, a local food pantry and service organization to the residents of Pepperell, has been given a magnificent oil painting depicting families in need with the logo of “Help Us Fill Their Plates”.

*The Board of Directiors of the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador gave a painting by Mauricio to the King of Spain.
