Tobia Rava lives and works in Venice, Italy. He attended the International School of Graphics of Venice and Urbino. He graduated in Semiology of the Arts at the University of Bologna. He began painting 1971, showing in individual and collective exhibitions in Italy and abroad since 1977. He is one of the founders of the Bologna group AlcArte, created in 1983. In 1988, he began concentrating on Jewish Iconography, carrying out research involving the cataloguing of Jewish Epigraphs in the Veneto, Friuli, and Trentino Alto Adige Regions in Northern Italy.
In 1993 he, along with Cimitan, Fontanello, Pain, and Vignato, promoted the Triplani (Three Planes) group, deriving its name from the idea that there is a third symbolic level of reading in addition to those of the signifier and the signified, stemmed from double-paned semiology of Greimas and Galabrese. Since 1999 he has lectured at Universities and Superior Schools of Art, speaking on his activity with Hebraic culture, mathematics logic and contemporary art.
Rava was a founding member of Concerto d’Arte Contemporanea, created to bring together artists ideas on harmonizing man with his environment and placing contemporary art in history and art history. The group exhibits in historic villas, parks, and city squares to extend the reach of art in their communities.
