Katherine Tarlov

Biography

Katherine Tarlov graduated from Brown University and the University of California at Davis. Tarlov received her MFA degree, was the recipient of a graduate block grant and teaching fellowship, and received acclaim in several juried shows in which she submitted work.

Tarlov’s work is textural in both its content and in the feel of the canvas before the viewer. She likes to paint textiles, whether it is a fabric or a string, and to infuse in the work a 3 dimensionality that makes you want to reach out and touch the surface of the canvas. This focus on patterns, color and cloth are clearly influenced by the work Tarlov has done in textile design, costume making for Broadway theater, television, and film.

The works have impastoed paint ( textural buildup to the paint on the surface of the canvas) which mirrors the texture of the image Tarlov paints. This image could be a leave, yarn, or a tassel with its complex interweaving patterns. The color, light, shadow and intended undulation to the work make you wonder how objects in daily life can be infused with a painterly life.
