A luminous landscape painter whose works are of mixed media, Mikel Wintermantel tends to work in layers of paint and does so in a quick fashion. For example, he may start with a red oxide ground, then paint the first layers in casein, then scrub color over the surface, then again work on top with casein or alkyds. His limited palette distinguishes his work to earn him prominence in several periodicals, including American Artist. He was a featured artist on a Massachusetts restoration project on the television show This Old House. Mikel conducted numerous workshops on the technique of painting in casein.
Mikel Wintermantel, a resident of Alleghany NY, attended a variety of institutions where he garnered a formal art training. These include the State University of New York at Potsdam where he studied under Dr. Joseph Hildreth, The Rhode Island School of Design studying under Lorraine Shemesh, Hardu Keck, and George Pappas. He also attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and St. Bonaventure University studying under James Cole Young. Mikel has conducted numerous workshops on the technique of painting in casein.
