Alexander Yelagin was born a legacy of the Russian royal lineage in Karaganda Kazakhstan at a time when royalty was under attack by the political system in the Soviet Union. His family relocated to a remote area in Siberia where he spent his formative years.
His paintings reflect his experience in Siberia as many of the works are solitary landscapes displaying images of structures, or objects, firmly rooted in the landscape around it. Many of these temperas, on canvas, give the sense of solitude and reflection, drawing upon his memories of his childhood. Yelagin’s palette is warm and soft emanating airiness and lightness rather than a dark despairing feeling one may assume from his background. A single chair or building in a field can seem to convey loneliness as well as a peaceful solitude.
Yelagin has been in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and is published and referenced in numerous periodicals. His artwork is held in collections around the world including the corporate collections of Deutsche Bank and Menatep Bank to name a few.
