Jonathan Eiten began studying art in 1987 at Central College in Pella, Iowa where he studied under Lawrence Mills. Under Mills, he learned printmaking and gained techniques of classical tradition in drawing. In 1989 Jonathan relocated to The Netherlands to study Dutch Art History at the University of Leiden and took studio courses at ARS Aemula Naturae (Leiden School of Art) under Frans De Haas. With access to Dutch museums, he focused on 17th Century Dutch Life and Painting. In 1992, Eiten completed his BFA in Fine Art at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he continued to study printmaking and drawing under the direction of Christoffel Overvoerde.
In 1997, Jonathan moved to Maine to apprentice under oil painter Jon Allen Marshall, CM. While working with Marshall, Jonathan was drawn back to his interest in Dutch Painting. He returned to The Netherlands to revisit the museums and absorb the delicacy of Vermeer and Rubens among others. In Holland, Jonathan visited the painter, Henk Helmantel, whose still life paintings inspired the direction he would take his painting.
Traditional 17th Century Dutch paintings continue to be a source of inspiration for Jonathan Eiten. The combination of Dutch techniques with contemporary themes create Jonathans unique and personal perspective.
